Brahms Symphony No. 4 – Viola Part

Edited by Steven Ansell

Title: Symphony No. 4
Composer: Johannes Brahms
Instrument: Viola
Edited By: Steven Ansell
Instrumentation: Orchestral
Pages: 16

The viola part for Brahms' Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98 has been edited by Steven Ansell, highly acclaimed musician, teacher, and principal violist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Ansell's bowings, fingerings and other editorial markings have been added throughout the score.

The last of Brahms' symphonies, he completed it in 1885 and conducted the premiere of the work himself later that year in Meiningen, Germany. In contrast to the triumphant and heroic sound of the First and Third Symphonies, the Fourth gives off a feeling of uncompromising intellectual complexity and expressive implacability, possibly even tragedy. The final movement, an unusual passacaglia, ends with one of the darkest and deepest minor key cadences in symphonic music.
