Rachmaninoff's Melody, Op. 3, No. 3 has been arranged for viola and piano by Viacheslav Dinerchtein, a Belarusian-born Swiss violist, who has appeared as a soloist with orchestra, in recitals, and in chamber music concerts throughout North & South America, Europe and Asia. An outspoken advocate for popularizing the viola, Mr. Dinerchtein is dedicatee of several viola compositions, and spares no effort to promote the expansion of the viola repertoire. The present arrangement represents his latest contribution in this regard.
Melody belongs to Rachmaninoff's early cycle of five short pieces for piano solo, which he compiled under the name of Morceaux de fantaisie (Fantasy Pieces). Written near the end of 1892, the set was dedicated to Rachmaninoff's composition teacher at the Moscow Conservatory, Anton Arensky. This arrangement of the Melody has been transposed a semitone higher to better highlight the viola's natural resonance and the melodic sonority of the composition. Dinerchtein has dedicated his arrangement to his former mentor Joseph de Pasquale. (See Dinerchtein's complete program notes)
