Linguine Midnight Halloween March - Elementary String Orchestra
By Richard Young
Title: Midnight Halloween March Composer: Angelo Linguine Instrument: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Piano, Organ Editor: Richard Young Instrumentation: String Orchestra, Piano and Organ Pages: 15 for Score and Parts
Midnight Halloween March is one of 16 pieces for elementary string ensemble included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. On a scale of "Easy", "More Challenging" to "Difficult (but Still Appropriate for Elementary Students)", Midnight Halloween March is rated "Easy".
This piece is appropriate for beginners since only open strings are used. Nevertheless it is a thriller. The character is similar to Danny Elfman's scores for a few of Tim Burton’s films, such as The Nightmare Before Christmas. It is creepy and ominous – the sort of music that keeps you awake at night and makes the hair on your arms stand up. Therefore kids won't be able to get enough of it!
Midnight Halloween March uses both pizzicato and arco open strings, and it is essential that teachers reinforce proper technique right from the beginning. For detailed comments about pizzicato, please refer to the background notes for Pizzicato Passacaglia. With the arco passages, it is important to monitor "the basics" that are outlined in the Pedagogy section of CSPC, such as the bow hold, the contact point, the bow direction, the bow angle, etc.

Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
