Folk Song O Come, O Come Emmanuel - Intermediate String Orchestra
By Richard Young
Title: O Come, O Come Emmanuel Composer: Folk Song Instrument: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass Editor: Richard Young Instrumentation: String Orchestra Pages: 8 for Score and Parts
O Come, O Come Emmanuel is one of 5 Christmas arrangements for intermediate string ensemble included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
This piece is based on a Gregorian chant that is traditionally performed at Christmas time. But since "Emmanuel" means "God is with us," one could say that this music is
appropriate for any time of year – because God is with us always, not just at Christmas.
Few pieces are better "etudes" for intonation than this one. Since the individual parts
are not difficult, one can focus 100% attention on LISTENING – which is the key to good
intonation, both individual intonation and ensemble intonation. If the ears are sharp, the
fingers know what to do.
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
