The Rainmaker is one of 16 arrangements for elementary string ensemble included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. Franz Schubert lived in Vienna during the beginning of the 19th century and died only one year after Beethoven. Therefore his music was a bridge between the Classical and
Romantic periods. This piece is from his famous piano trio in E-flat major, D. 929.
The rustling sixteenths should be played on the string, leggieramente, in the upper part
of the bow, using very little bow. The accompanying eighth notes should be on the
string, just above the middle of the bow, using very little bow. The tempo must be
absolutely steady.
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical." A complimentary keyboard accompaniment sound file for Linguine: The Rainmaker is available here.
