Hadyn's Quartet in C Major, Op. 33 No. 3 is one of 12 string quartets for intermediate string ensemble included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
It makes perfect sense that the introduction to string quartet playing for our students should include works by Haydn, "the father of the string quartet."
Haydn composed more than sixty works for this unique combination of two violins, viola, and cello, setting the standard not only for other Classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven, but for every composer throughout history who has chosen this most challenging form. It's a form that follows the most basic soprano/alto/tenor/bass template used in every traditional church hymn. It's a form that composers have turned to again and again to express their most personal and intimate feelings, but which they also use to project their grandest and most extroverted emotions and dreams. It's a form that relies on nothing more than four like-sounding, archaic wooden instruments – a form where composers are unable to hide behind colorful orchestrations or compelling texts, or exploit a huge compliment of loud and louder instruments. Rather, it's a form that challenges them to rely solely on their skill, discipline, and a full range of imagination as they do everything possible to “make more out of "less." Is there a better life-lesson for any young person to learn, sooner than later?
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
