Spohr's From the Heart is one of 12 string quartet arrangements for intermediate strings included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
From the Heart is a string quartet version of a string orchestra piece that’s included in CSPC’s Elementary section. (Please refer to the background notes found in Repertoire for Elementary Ensembles.) Like almost all of Ludwig Spohr’s music, it is unfamiliar to today’s audiences. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why it is such a refreshing and effective encore choice.
The iconic masterpieces for string quartet by Schubert, Brahms, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn are popular choices, not just among students but also their teachers. But because most uninitiated young string players are not yet at the level that is required to play them reasonably well, the results for audiences and players alike can be embarrassing. Like other “etude-encores” in this section, From the Heart is an excellent starting point – one that bridges the technical gap between where students are and where they need to be. Though this piece is more difficult than a number of others offered here, its technical demands are not beyond the reach of ambitious students who have been conscientiously taught. “Raising the bar high” is essential. However we should never overlook the importance of empowering our students to perform in public without the need for excuses and polite caveats. At every step of their development, it’s necessary to choose repertoire that will not only challenge them, but will also enable each one of them to be a “hero” onstage – something that is far less certain in a string quartet where you’re the only one playing your part.

Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
