Beethoven's C minor symphony is arguably the most familiar orchestral work ever written. It is also one of the most abused masterpieces performed by youth orchestras all over the world. This is because students are too often expected to play it without having been given the necessary tools. Energy, passion, and even talent are not enough to compensate for inadequate technical background. Though young students may be initially excited by the challenge of playing such an important piece, they are gradually overwhelmed as they realize that they lack the ability to play something so difficult. And when they're then put on public display, as much as they love being in the spotlight, they can feel humiliated. Sounding poor at the beginning is one thing. But if kids don't sense that they're getting better, they grow impatient and even depressed. Whenever anyone, at any age, reaches a barrier that seems to be impenetrable, it's only natural to begin to question if it's all worth it.
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
