Strauss Sr.'s Radetzky: March is one of 11 classical pieces for intermediate orchestra included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
This popular march is an effective concert piece or encore. But since Strauss favors the 1st violins throughout, it can be less interesting for the other string players. For this reason, the violins switch parts in the Trio section of this version, which enables the 2nd violins to play the melody with the cellos.
The style throughout should be crisp and elegant, never heavy and ponderous. Each of the melody's grace notes should be played as an acciaccatura: fast and before the beat. The quarter note accompaniment should be played with very little bow, au talon, with the bow placed on the string (with moderate pressure) prior to each note.
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
