Title: Unfinished Symphony Composer: Franz Schubert Instrument: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass Editor: Richard Young Instrumentation: Orchestral Pages: 37 for String Parts
Schubert's Unfinished Symphony is one of 11 classical pieces for intermediate orchestra included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
This is surely one of the most important and iconic works in the orchestral repertoire. Because of its moderate difficulty, it is an ideal piece for Intermediate students. The extra string parts provided here make it possible for Elementary students to play as well. Intermediate students should share responsibility for the preparation of these children, consistent with the El Sistema philosophy that every student is ultimately a teacher.
A full score that includes the original parts plus the extra parts is not provided here. Therefore the conductor must mark in his/her score the places where it is necessary to cue the Elementary players.
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
