Vivaldi Spring - Intermediate String Orchestra
By Richard Young
Title: Spring
Composer: Antonio Vivaldi
Instrument: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass
Editor: Richard Young
Instrumentation: String Orchestra
Pages: 28 for String Parts
Vivaldi's Spring is one of 11 Classical pieces for intermediate string ensemble included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
Since every phrase in this piece corresponds to very evocative lines in a poem, it is easy for teachers to emphasize not only different dynamics but also different colors. And since each of these colors requires its own unique technique, Spring invites a review of these special techniques. The underlying message, however, should be that technique serves the music, not the other way around.
Here is the poem...
Spring has arrived and happily
the birds welcome it in joyful song,
and the streams flow at the breath of zephyrs
with sweet murmuring. Meanwhile:
the sky darkens and there is thunder and lightning.
Afterwards, however, the little birds return
and all sing anew.
And so, on the pleasant, flowery meadow under the
rustling trees, the shepherd sleeps with his faithful
dog at his side.
To the festive sounds of country bagpipes, nymphs
and shepherds dance under the glorious spring sky.
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
