Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 is one of 11 classical pieces for advanced orchestra included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
Even though Beethoven used the very same forms favored by other composers of the Classical period, he would alter them in radical ways, particularly during this experimental and turbulent "middle period." For instance, he might use these forms in movements for which they were not traditionally intended – such as when he wrote all four movements of Op. 59 #1 in sonata form. On other occasions he would "stretch" these forms beyond their conventional proportions – as he did in the scherzo of the 7th symphony. Instead of the customary 3-part movement (scherzo, trio, scherzo) that he inherited from Haydn, he turned this into a 5-part movement: scherzo, trio, scherzo, trio, scherzo. Similar examples include the Op. 69 sonata for cello and piano, the Op. 70 #2 piano trio, and the Op. 59 #2 and Op. 74 string quartets. In the first movement of the 5th symphony, however, Beethoven uses Haydn's original prototype for sonata form, saving his radical innovations for this music's expression.

Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
