Dvořák Symphony No. 9 - Advanced Orchestra
By Richard Young
Title: Symphony No. 9 Composer: Antonin Dvořák Instrument: Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass Editor: Richard Young Instrumentation: Orchestral Pages: 72 for String Parts
Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 is one of 11 classical pieces for advanced orchestra included in Richard Young's Comprehensive String Pedagogy & Curriculum. A portion of the proceeds of sales for all CSPC music goes to support free music education at The People's Music School.
For many good reasons, this symphony is one of the most popular choices for
advanced youth orchestras. It is dynamic, highly emotional, and accessible to players
and audiences alike. It is also a wonderful vehicle for featuring the winds and brass.
But conductors should beware! The level of difficulty is not comparable to
symphonies by Brahms and Tchaikovsky. This is because the 1st violin parts are much
more challenging due to the many exposed passages that must be played in the high
positions. There are also many thorny passages in the cello and bass parts. Finally,
this work requires a first-rate English horn player for the famous solo in the slow
movement – which not every youth orchestra has.
-Richard Young
Full program notes are included with the score. There are fingerings and bowings in all the string parts of every one of CSPC's pieces. These "cooked-in" technical solutions target the particular levels of the students. They are not just pragmatic but "musical."
Please note that due to a loss of source files, the PDF files of the music have been generated from scanned copies of printed parts. While every effort has been made to produce high quality parts, the limitations of scanning will result in some degradation of print quality.
